The intentions of this car are evident the moment one glances at the spec sheet. It's a V8 powered, fixed roof SLK.
The folding metal artwork has been replaced by a carbon fiber roof. The elimination of the vario roof and the entire
roof hydraulics system lowers both the weight and the center of gravity.
The lower weight is complemented by a Black Series specific 55. This one has new headers, different
cams, and a higher flow air box. This engine makes 400 horsepower and 520 foot-pounds of torque.
Power is transmitted to the wheels by a standard issue 7G-TRONIC with speedshift, aluminum shift paddles on the steering
wheel, and an AMG start button on the shifter.
The AMG spec springs and dampers have been replaced with AMG Black Series spec parts. The new shocks have adjustable
compression and rebound, and the ride height can be adjusted 5 mm in either direction. There is a thick strut tower
tying the front together. The 19 inch wheels are Black Series specific and save over 8 pounds per corner when compared
with the standard SLK55 wheels.
The additional power and improved suspension is mated with more efficient brakes. The front brakes have six-piston
calipers squeezing 360 mm composite discs. The rear brakes are standard issue SLK55 calipers and discs.
The interior is shod with fixed back AMG sport seats with large side bolsters. The seats come in black pearl velour with
a silver AMG logo. The new AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel comes in leather and Alcantara and retains it's
electronic adjustment. The interior door panels, trim, and roof lining are carbon fiber. The glove compartment has Black
Series lettering over carbon fiber trim. Similar lettering is on the trunk lid.
The car has a new front bumper cover. The cover has wider openings, which are used to supply fresh air to the
transmission-oil cooler and power steering-oil cooler. In addition, new carbon fiber side outlets are used to increase
air flow over the engine-oil coolers. The front wings are now wider and are made of reinforced plastic with ultra-light
carbon fiber composite material and feature black outlined air outlets.
The SLK 55 AMG Black Series is manufactured by hand in the Performance Studio. It offers all the features that set a
Mercedes-Benz apart: fitness for everyday use, durability, safety and quality.
