Have I sent you a WIS? Did you loose the docs that came with said WIS? This page will save us both some time. If you just need the WIS help file, this is it.

Regarding the following instructions - if you spot an error, email me the details. I've never had to install the loopback adapter, but it's free and only takes a minute. I can tell you that if your virus protection software does not allow the WIS the ability to access the Internet, the software will default to German. When the virus protection software asks if the WIS can access the internet, just click yes. If your virus software doesn't ask, don't worry about it. The software really just wants to know that it can use a port in the PC's IP stack, it doesn't actually talk to anyone. You can confirm this by installing the software and disconnecting the PC from the internet. It'll still work in English, without trouble.

Before moving on to the instructions, let me just say the WIS works under Windows 7. I have it running on a desktop. You must have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, but it does work. It must be installed and run in XP Mode.

Set-up Instructions For Mercedes-Benz WIS CD-Rom

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH INSTALLATION - Particularly **?..** see: STEP 1 ** .... ** see: STEP 1 Screen resolution must be set to a minimum of 1024x768x256 colours in order for WIS to display correctly. Disable any virus protection / firewall software you have running & your screensaver before installation. Compatible Operating Systems are NT, Win 2000, XP, & XP Pro.

If installing WIS together with the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue), install EPC first.

Install the 'Loopback Adapter' using the 'Add Hardware' feature from 'Control Panel' before the installation of WIS. WIS will sometimes not operate without this Adapter installed.

  1. Access 'Control Panel' from the 'Start' menu
  2. 'Add Hardware'. The Add Hardware wizard screen will appear
  3. Click NEXT
  4. Windows searches for new hardware then prompts for question response
  5. Select: "Yes, I have already connected the hardware"
  6. Click NEXT
  7. Select from list: "Add a new hardware device"
  8. Click NEXT
  9. Select: "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)"
  10. Click NEXT
  11. Select from the list: "Network Adapters"
  12. Click NEXT
  13. Select from left pane of manufacturers: "Microsoft" & from the right pane: "Microsoft Loopback Adapter"
  14. Click NEXT twice
  15. Click FINISH

Note: Not all systems require the installation of the Loopback Adapter. To test yours, first complete WIS installation with Loopback Adapter then access 'Connect to' > "Show all connections", from the 'Start' menu. Right-click on the Loopback Adapter icon and select disable. If WIS continues to function without error, this adapter is not required and can be uninstalled if you wish. Via 'Control Panel', 'Add or Remove Programs'.

STEP 1

  1. Insert DVD 1 into your MAIN disc drive and browse its contents
  2. Go to the folder WIS\WISINST
  3. Double-click on 'Setup.exe'

  13. Click Ok
  14. Click Start

** It is recommended (but not absolutely necessary) that 5 Gigs of NTFS partitioned space is used & that all files are installed to the same place as opposed to being distributed between several hard drives/partitions.

Advanced - If multiple hard drives/partitions are used; setup your bios for multiple boot operation. Be sure that hard drive Master Boot Record is clean. Also Zero Out the drive (Low Level Format). This will be required each time if, errors or unsuccessful install are encountered whilst using/installing WIS. ** The installation program will then proceed to copy the data files to your hard drive. This may take sometime (dependant on your PC's speed). If a screensaver or other window is opened; the file transfer window may appear to crash and not respond, do not attempt to exit! The file transfer folders may even stop moving but the installation will still be working. Allow it to run.

You will be prompted to

  1. Insert DVD 2 ('CD/DVD Action Required' window will appear)
  2. Insert DVD 2 and click Ok
  3. Make selection at "Install Screen-Saver?" prompt
  4. Readme can be seen later
  5. Click YES at "Do you want to install the documentation from the CD onto the server?"

YOU ARE NOW DONE!!!!

General Info & Notes:

You may change the ADMIN password in the PM Manager section configuration.

You may give User rights to operate the WIS ONLY in the Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, User Manager. Select "User" LH comer, select NEW USER, create a User Name, give it a password, select user cannot change password, password never expires, & Deselect User must change password. NOW click on GROUPS at the bottom, Highlight "wisusers" on the right side then clicks on "ADD" select "OK" to close box and "OK" again to close that box. There you just created a USER Name for your Shop Tech's and they will be locked out of sensitive areas. Note: you can leave the password blank so they won't have to type in a password at the login screen (Same screen where the Administrator logins in), you just have to change the Name each time. You will also have to create a new desktop shortcut for them, as they will have their own screen. Is different than the Administrator. NOTE you will see a USER name called "dbag" this was created by the WIS program that already gave access to the WIS you can use this if you want, but remember to change the settings, password etc.

Create Shortcut Path for WIS

C:\opt\MBcase\wis\bin\wis.exe (or whichever directory you installed WIS to).

Shortcut for USER Documentation:

C:\opt\MBcase\doc\readme\USER\WIS\ENGLISH\USER_E.PDF

Or alternatively, browse DVD 1 and go to the folder E:\wis\wis\README. This folder contains all user documentation.

Create Association to Adobe Reader at

C:\opt\MBcase\doc\Reader32\AcroRd32.exe

ALT + F4 Will END the WIS program from any Screen.
