Lubing the Wiper Mechanism

The W208 mono-wiper is another in a long list of reasons why it's good to follow a maintenance "schedule". The mono-wiper has to be lubed. When the wiper runs dry, it will start to run slow, and/or hesitate in certain places along the cyclical path. If the hesitation is left unnoticed, the wiper motor will eventually burn out.

Step 1: I positioned the wiper arm at 10:30 on the windshield. This was done by turning the wiper on and turning the ignition key to OFF when the wiper was in position.

Step 2: I removed the upper plastic cover by pulling it down and then out. Once the cover was out of the way, a hex screw was exposed. If for some reason I have to remove the entire wiper arm, this can be done by removing the hex bolt. The wiper doesn’t have to be removed to lube the wiper.

Step 3: I loosened the lower cover by spreading the two release tabs. The red arrows point to the tabs. However, the lower cover cannot be removed with the wiper arm in place, and the lower cover need only be tilted to lube the mechanism. In the following photo, I removed the lower cover and rotated the arm to 12:00 for clarity.

Step 4: After cleaning up the old grease, I used white lithium grease on the vertical sliders and the center rod. There were no surprises during reassembly. I simply snapped the two covers back in place and I was all set.
