W208 Cabin Filter Change

Changing the cabin filter is easy. There are a number of steps, but the steps are simple.

The first thing that’s needed is a filter. I use Bosch charcoal activated filters.

Next, the old filter has to be removed. To get to the cabin filter, two access panels have to be removed. Both panels are accessible from the passenger side of the car.

The first panel is on the transmission tunnel. It has to be removed to gain access to the second panel.

The screw on it looks like it can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver, but it can’t. The screw has to be pulled back. That can be done by prying it back with a small flathead screwdriver, or with some needle nose pliers. After the screw has been pulled back, I then pull the entire panel toward the rear. The next photo is a shot of the panel after it’s been removed. You can see that it’s a slip fit with the pin to the left holding it in place.

With that out of the way, the main panel can be removed. It’s held in place by three Phillips screws and a plastic guide in the rear. After removing the three screws, I pull the panel toward the rear of the car.

With the panels out of the way, the housing cover has to be removed. The housing cover is held in place by two brackets. The photo has red arrows pointing to the clips. The closest one slides toward the rear of the car, and the farthest one toward the front. The cover can then be pulled down.

At this point, the filter is exposed and it’s ready to be removed. The furthest side of the filter has a hook. I grab that hook with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the filter out. I pay attention to how the filter came out because it should go back in the exact same way.

Yes, installation is the reverse of removal. Just remember to position the plastic guide in the back of the main panel.

Lastly, here are some photos of the new and old filters. Note the difference in color, and the trash that fell out of the old filter by simply tapping it.
